Design Outpost

Posted on April 3rd, 2006.

I found Design Outpost through the Joel On Software forums - I like the idea!
Let’s say you need a logo for a new product. you post the project details and the price (paid in advance) and a group of designers basically bid for that amount by posting their suggestions for your project.

I really like the fact that all communication is done through the site’s forum. You can browse the forums and see how a project is evolved, how ideas are starting to take form and what the final product looks like. All closed projects are kept in their own forum.

I’m going to need a logo design and a website design soon. I don’t think I’ll use Design Outpost for the web site design (I’ll leave that to a single proffesional), but it looks like a valid option for the logo design.

If you’ve used Design Outpost – I’d like to hear how it worked for you.

What a brilliant idea!
Make designers work their ass off producing the goods prior to sale!
Yeah, brilliant!

I’ll hire you for code next, if you only submit your work first in a bidding war.

having been a designer who thought Design Outpost would be a good way to ‘get me foot’ in the door … I now have a very different opinion. The forums and ‘service’ offering simply take advantage of designers, and in turn degrading the professional approach and cost of PROPERLY designing a creative logo that works.

Let’s just remember, a logo represents a business and/or product/service. If it’s done well you’ll use it to promote said business/products for years to come … that’s worth a little more than the $150 Design Outpost are willing to accept for a logo ‘project (read: competition, or free pitch.)

Still, at the end of the day … you get what you pay for. Best of luck in getting a good solution from Design Outpost for logo designs.

I had Design Outpost work on a job.
Project designs were not great.
Refund was a nightmare.
Would not recommend.

Hi,
Sounds great for a logo, but I must agree; keep the actual web design restricted to a single source or you would probably end up with Heinze 57.

It’s an enormous advantage to have read your post. In fact, I learn a lot from it. It was certainly very informative and even worth sharing to others. Keep it up and I wish to read more issues from you. Thanks a lot.
